At the same time, he also announced the adoption of modifications to a number of the electronic transactions and code sets adopted as national standards.

Modifications to the Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information - Final Rule (August 9, 2002)
Overview: The Department of Health and Human Services on August 14th will publish final modifications to the Privacy Rule to ensure that the Rule provides strong privacy protection without hindering access to quality health care. President Bush and Secretary Thompson are committed to maintaining protections for the privacy of individually identifiable health information. Based on the comments received on the notice of proposed rulemaking, the Department modified a number of provisions of the Privacy Rule.

HHS Announces New Director, OCR (July 26,2002)
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today named Richard M. Campanelli as the new director of the department's Office for Civil Rights (OCR). Campanelli will provide overall leadership of OCR's mission to promote and ensure that individuals have equal access and opportunity in all HHS programs, without facing unlawful discrimination. OCR also has responsibility for medical privacy issues.
